Croatia is a land filled with stunning landscapes, breathtaking contrasts and more than its fair share of hidden gems. Korcula Island – Dalmatia´s most relaxing getaway – ticks all of those boxes and is the perfect destination for those in the know to explore and soak up the culture, tradition, cuisine and immense beauty of this little slice of heaven.
As the sixth-largest island in Croatia, and, being somewhat further away from Dubrovnik and Split, a little more challenging to get to than some of its counterparts, Korcula Island is perhaps less-well known than other Croatian tourist destinations. But don’t let that put you off – this stunning island is more than worth the effort! At some 20 miles long and around 4 or 5 miles wide, the island boasts dense forest inland, in stunning contrast to its beaches, leading the Greeks to name it ‘Black Korcula’.
As the island doesn’t have an airport, the best options for getting there are flying to either Split or Dubrovnik, before getting your sea legs ready. There’s a daily car ferry from Split to Vela Luka (more frequently in summer) with a journey time of 3 hours. Alternatively, a catamaran can take you to various destinations on the island, with journey times starting at just an hour and 45 minutes – simple! Just make sure to check for any seasonal variations. You can also catch a ferry from ferry port Dubrovnik that takes you to the island up to 5 or 6 times a day in high season.
Whether you’re looking for total relaxation or water sports adventure, there’s a beach for you on Korcula. Most are sheltered coves with shingle or pebble beaches, and offer the perfect conditions for swimmers. However, there are some great sandy options, including Vela Pržina, a great location for families, close to Lumbarda with all of its facilities and options for refreshments. Others, such as pebbly Pupnatska Luka are real hidden gems, with crystal clear water, fascinating sea-life for snorkellers, and plenty of konoba beach bars to keep you refreshed.
Korcula Town is the main resort on the island, and with its beautiful medieval squares and Venetian Renaissance architecture, it’s often referred to as ‘Little Dubrovnik’. The ancient medieval walled city boasts a wealth of cafés, bars and restaurants to help keep your energy up or for watching the world go by, as well as museums, galleries and even an open-air cinema. Korcula was apparently the birthplace of none other than Marco Polo himself, so you can squeeze in a visit to the home of the island’s most celebrated son.
One of the most beautiful villages on the island, Lumbarda is situated about 4km from Korcula Town in the north, and it benefits from access to both coastlines. With its sandy beaches, Lumbarda is perfect for families with children and lovers of water-sports, while the adults might also enjoy the stunning sights and vineyards the village is famed for.
As one of Croatia’s sunniest spots, and the main gateway to the island with its car ferry port, Vela Luka is a popular destination for visitors. Along with the spectacular vistas and access to beaches, Vela Luka is also renowned for its thriving arts scene and boasts a cultural centre where you can see sculptures by Henry Moore. Island traditions are alive and well here, making it the perfect place to enjoy groups performing traditional dances and choral performances. There’s even a Neolithic Cave to explore, plus all the amazing cuisine you can come to expect on the island.
When it comes to picking the perfect pad for your trip to Korcula, the island has something to offer every visitor. Whether you’re just passing through for a few nights while exploring the area and need something convenient, or planning to kick back and relax for a longer stretch, there’s a great selection of villas, holiday homes and apartments to choose from.
